About the Ontario Health Care Plan (OHIP)

If you plan to live in Canada, the province of Ontario has its unique health care plan called OHIP. This health care plan applies to all residents of Ontario who receive an Ontario Health Card. If you successfully applied for your Ontario Health Card, you are eligible for OHIP.

When do you use your Ontario Health Card?

The Ontario Health Card is used every time you visit a doctor, an emergency room, get a medical test, or have an operation. You must present it to prove that Health Insurance covers you.

What does your Ontario health care plan cover?

Your OHIP covers health services, such as:

  • Doctor visits;
  • Walk-in visits to clinics for certain health services;
  • Medical tests;
  • Medical procedures and necessary surgeries (non-cosmetic); and
  • Emergency room visits

How do you qualify for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)?

Minimum Requirements for Health Insurance

To be eligible for OHIP minimum requirements, you must:

  • Live in Ontario for 153 days of the year;
  • Live in Ontario for 153 days out of 183 days after your first move to the province; and
  • Make Ontario your primary residence (not a secondary, secondary or another home)

If you meet all of the requirements above, you must meet at least 1 of the conditions listed below to be eligible for Health Insurance. You have to:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, aboriginal or permanent resident of Canada
  • Have applied for permanent residence to IRCC for:
  • Prove You Can Apply For RAMO
  • Prove that your application for permanent residence in Canada has not been refused
    To have:
  • a valid Ontario work permit that allowed you to work full time for at least six months;
  • a valid Ontario work permit under the federal live-in caregiver program
  • Be a protected person or a Convention refugee, as defined by Immigration and Refugee Canada
  • Have a temporary residence permit (this only applies to case types 86-95)
  • Belong to a legal, religious organization (minister, priest, etc.) who will exercise at least six months full time

How can you apply for OHIP

  • You must first make an appointment with the Service Ontario Center
  • For your appointment, you must bring the following:
  • A complete Ontario health coverage form
  • Three original documents that prove you:
  • You are a citizen of Ontario (permanent resident card or Ontario birth certificate);
  • You live in Ontario (Ontario tax assessment or Ontario driver’s license);
  • You are not using the identity of another person (provide your credit card or passport)

If you wish to apply for a RAMO with children under the age of 16, you

You do not need a photo or signature on their health care, and it must be signed by the parent or guardian responsible for the child.

When does your OHIP cover you after having successfully applied?

If your Health Insurance application has been approved, you can expect to wait three months before being covered by Health Insurance. We strongly advise you to take out your medical insurance for this period of 3 months.
